Microsoft kicks off Windows 8

Microsoft, the world's largest software maker, has launched its newest operating system Windows 8, which it claims delivers a “no-compromise computing experience”.

The radical design of Windows 8, which is designed to run on PCs and tablet computers, is going on sale starting Friday. It is also the first time that Microsoft has created touch-screen controls as a top priority, although users can still easily control the desktop by keyboard and mouse.

“We know that the boundaries about how we can see the work and fun and home have really changed. A computer is no longer synonymous with office productivity. It is now the thing we use in daily life,” of Microsoft president for Asia-Pacific Tracey Fellows said on the sidelines of the Windows 8 launch at the Esplanade Theatre, Singapore, on Thursday afternoon.

According to Fellows, people now use computers to shop, browse the web, do social networking and run business; but, sometimes they use more than one device. He said that they used one device at home and other devices at work or elsewhere.

With Windows 8, Fellows said that users could work and play using only one device.

“You can consume content, or you can create content. You can use a touch screen, keyboard or mouse. You can do it very quickly, depending on what you want to do. And you can use it for work and for fun. With Windows 8, you can choose how you use it and it works depending on how you want it to work,” she said.

Microsoft will be working with several PC producers, including Asus, Acer, Hewlett Packard (HP), Dell, Lenovo, Toshiba, Sony and Samsung in delivering the newest operating system.
